Okay fellas…I know that don’t have much time left to shop and you may need a little help figuring out what to buy for that special woman in your life. So have no fear I am going to help you get through this Valentines Day without the the eye rolling, looks of disgust and accusations. Put  down your remote, turn off the video games and focus on these very simple do’s and don’ts that are sure to make this Valentines Day come off as a big success.

DO buy flowers and chocolate ( but that can’t be the only gift)

Flowers and candy might be a little cliche but every woman loves flowers and chocolates, however if you choose to go that route you have to make sure that you add something more personal (like that necklace that she has been talking about for weeks or those shoes she has been talking about) to let her know that you actually put some thought into her gift. After all, millions of women across the country will be receiving flowers and candy that same day.

DO have dinner at home ( home cooked or pick up and go)

Trust me, I do understand that there are a lot of men out there that can’t cook and that’s okay but odds are… you have a mother, an aunt or a grandmother that can. So call up one of your female relatives or even a female friend and tell them that you want to cook a special meal for that special woman in you life… I’m sure that someone will be more than happy to help. If that’s not an option for you, I would suggest looking up some easy to cook meals online and see what you can do yourself. Just in case make sure that you have the number to a local restaurant handy so if it doesn’t come out as planned you can pick up a meal and take the credit for it. More than likely she will be able to figure out that you didn’t cook the meal but the effort put into making it look like you did will surely impress.

DO write a letter that expresses why she is important to you

I understand that it is so simple to go out and pick up a card but take it from a woman’s point of view…a letter that is written from the heart means more than any hallmark card, plus it’s cheaper. If you write a  letter to her she will be so appreciative, just knowing that you took the time to pour your heart out. Nothing is more sexy than a man that’s not afraid to show his emotional side every now and then. Oh and just in case you were wondering…most women could care less about grammar, mis-spelled words and handwriting. We just want to know that we are important to you.

DO take her to her favorite clothing store to pick out an outfit

Women love to shop so any time that you show interest in shopping she will be excited. Even if you would rather be at home playing XBOX, act like you are interested…one day of shopping won’t kill you. A new outfit can really make a woman feel good and when your woman feels good…I guarantee you will benefit from it.

Okay, so now it’s time for the big DON”TS. PAY ATTENTION…these are the things that could push a woman over the edge.

DONT buy her flowers and candy and think that’s enough

Everyone knows that woman love flowers and candy so it’s pretty obvious when you come home with it that you didn’t put much thought into it. If you decide to get flowers and candy and she says that she’s happy to get them…she probably is, but you must know that she is expecting more.

DONT take her to a family restaurant where there will probably be babies crying

The family restaurants might be okay for a regular day but for this occasion a more adult setting would mean so much more. Yes, these restaurants will be a little more expensive but it’s Valentine’s Day and  hey you’ve been saving up for this. Right? Besides this should be a time for you to talk and have some quiet time with no interruptions.

DONT take her on a group date

This should seriously be a no brainer but unfortunately a lot of guys have  trouble with this one. Valentines Day is supposed a special day for you to spend with her and more than likely she has been looking forward to this for a while. Don’t ruin this by making this another day for you to spend with your boys…chances are she won’t be thrilled about this even if she doesn’t say anything. Don’t be selfish, spending alone time is always going to be high on the list of things that women love to do.

DONT pick out an outfit for her

Let me reiterate, women love to shop! Unless you are picking out lingerie, let her shop for her  own outfit. Let’s be honest, you probably wouldn’t even know where to start…so instead of picking an outfit out of frustration, leave the shopping to her.

DONT pick a fight

If something is bothering you…wait until Monday to say something. Don’t ruin the romance with an argument…that could crush her. Women really look forward to Valentine’s Day and if you really love her…it can wait.

More important than any of the dos and don’ts…make this day special and something that she can go back to her girlfriends and brag about. The most embarrassing thing that a woman could go through after Valentine’s Day is listening to her girlfriends brag about all of the things that their boyfriend’s did, wishing that hers could have done the same. If you have been lacking in the romance department, now is the time to redeem yourself and let your girl know just how special she is to you. Even if it’s the opposite and your girlfriend hasn’t been showing the affection that you need, this might be exactly what she needs to step it up. Whatever it is, just have fun and take this time to remind her why she choose you.

Age aint nothin but a number in UFC 109

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

I just witnessed 2 of the oldest, I mean “seasoned,” fighters in MMA fight in the UFC tonight.  Mark “The Hammer” Coleman took on Randy “The Natural” Couture in the main event of UFC 109.  This fight was actually supposed to happen 11 years ago before Couture hurt his rib and had to pull out of the fight.

Maybe the fight would’ve been more competitive if it had happened then because Randy Couture dominated the fight with his dirty boxing, clinches and ground and pound before submitting Coleman with a choke early in round 2.

Whats more intriguing than the actual fight is the fact that both of these guys are in their mid 40′s (Coleman 45, Couture 46).  Even though most guys lose some of their speed and resilience after years of competing, they both claimed that they feel better than they ever have. I find some truth in that because even though they may not be what they once were physically, they have more knowledge than they did when they were in their primes, and knowledge is power.

What is it that makes guys like Robert Parish and Brett Favre compete professionally for so long? Money?  In some cases yes, but usually its more for the love of the sport and the glory that comes with it.  Guys like Gordie Howe and Randy Couture play and fight for so long because they like to defy the odds and prove to themselves as well as others that they still got it.

Tonight Randy Couture made Mark Coleman respect his elders- A lesson we could all use.
