By now I’m sure that you all have heard Willow Smith’s debut hit song ‘Whip My Hair’ and if you haven’t… clearly you have been living under a rock. Willow, the daughter of actors Will and Jada Smith has definitely made her mark with this song. Less than a month ago she dropped ‘Whip My Hair’ and already  her single can be heard on just about every hip hop and pop radio station. Oh and did I mention she is signed to Jay-Z’ s label, Roc Nation. Yeah that’s right…that means she’s official!

Before I actually had the chance to hear this song, I heard the hype surrounding it and I must admit that I didn’t think twice about it. I remember saying that this was going to be another case of celebrities trying to push their not so talented child to follow in their footsteps. I was so wrong! This girl has got it going on…her swag is so ridiculous! The song is very positive and upbeat and I absolutely love it! She may have taken us by surprise with this one but I got a feeling that we can expect great things from this 9-year-old  in the future.

BET’s Stephen Hill Clears Up Chris Brown’s “fake cry” Rumors

Finally…BET’s Stephen Hill speaks out about the rumors that Chris Brown’s tears were fake, for all the haters of course. There are so many rumors that circulated about Brown’s  emotional performance at the BET Awards but of course the two that were the most repeated were the most ridiculous. One rumor claimed that Brown’s bodyguards gave him tear drops backstage to make him cry. Another claims that Jay-Z, Beyonce and Rihanna boycotted the awards after finding out that Brown would be performing.

Here is what Stephen Hill had to say about the rumors:

On the rumor that Chris Brown’s bodyguard gave him tear inducing drops so that he could “fake cry”

I think the pressure of the year and the lyrics of that song really just resonated. And, as someone who was backstage, there was nothing fake about that. I think there is a US Weekly story today about like his bodyguard gave him something to induce tears. Its just not true. I’ve been around actors who cry and when you fake cry, you don’t get…your throat doesn’t get swollen like it does [when you cry for real]. When he was trying to sing, he couldn’t get anything out. That’s a hard thing to fake. I appreciate people wanting to create controversy, but this guy has gone though a lot this past year, let this emotion be what it is. Everybody comes to the moment where you gotta make that change.

On Jay-z and Beyonce’s no-show

They missed the awards, because…we have this conversation almost every year. And, some years we are really fortunate when Jay-Z and Beyonce are in the house and other times, they go on vacation. But I can absolutely say without reservation that there was no conversation at all around, “If Chris Brown’s coming, I’m not coming.” That’s just false.

Unsigned Artist Of The Week: HYPE “Overnight”

Hailing straight from the Motor City is an artist that you don’t want to sleep on. He goes by the name of Hype and that is something that he definitely lives up to. From his honest lyrics and undeniable swag, he is proof that the flame for real Detroit based hip hop has not yet been extinguished.

Hype is no stranger to hard work, for the last two years he has been in the studio committing himself to his first project entitled “Overnight” What started out as a diss record in a friend’s studio has turned into the creation of an entire album filled with passion and real life experiences. Since the age of 15, he has been writing so it’s only natural that his passion for music would ignite an urge to put out an album. After observing the success of other artist, Hype decided that he was ready to share his talent and love for hip hop with the world.

Hype (named by one of his best friends after hearing his music) is more than a name for this up and coming Detroit artist, it perfectly describes his music. With songs like “I Lived It” and “Welcome, I’m Here,” there is no way that you can deny his ability to get you “HYPE.”

When asked how he describes his music, Hype says, “I really listen to artists’ lyrics to try and understand where they might be coming from. My music comes from my heart , if I haven’t lived or experienced it someone very close to me has. A lot of people who don’t know me describe my music as lyrical and passionate. Other people from Detroit feel that it is very personal.”

With a passion fueled by musical influences like Jay-Z, Eminem, 50 cent and 2pac, Hype is determined to build an empire for himself just as they have. The desire to be great instilled in him by his mother and grandmother growing up is evident in his will to succeed in every aspect of his life. His continued dedication and constant desire to learn more are exactly why Hype is destined to become a household name.

So what can we expect from Hype in the future? He says, “ I plan on working with a lot of other Detroit artists for my first full-scale mixtape, which I plan to drop by the summer.”

I’m looking forward to watching the development and success Hype will experience as he begins his career in the music industry. Speaking with Hype and listening to his music I know that hip hop is more than just a hobby for him. He has a genuine desire to put out good music and with his strong “can do” attitude, I have a feeling that Hype will definitely meet success at the front door. The music industry is full of sharks and negativity but something tells me that Hype has what it takes to make any naysayer think twice.

The wait is over! The highly anticipated single “Light Up”   from Drake featuring Jay-Z has finally been released. This song is so hot! The concept behind the song seems perfect, it’s exactly how I imagined the relationship between the two rap artist. Jay-Z plays the mentor, sharing his experiences and offering advice for Drake to take along with him as he makes his way to the top.  The structure of the song was such a pleasant surprise. First Drake spits one long verse and then Jay hits us with an equally long verse, with a hook in between and at the end by none other than Drizzy.

I’m such a  huge Jay and Drake fan and I can really appreciate this song. Drake has definitely made his mark in the music industry and I think that the best is yet to come from him.  I mean, how many artist do you know have gained so much popularity and love without even putting out an album? He’s great now…just imagine when he becomes the greatest! It will happen…TRUST ME!

Below are some of Jay’s lyrics from the song:

Drake, here’s how they gon come at you, With silly rap feuds trying to distract you/ In disguise in the form of a favor The Barzini meeting, watch for the traitors/ and i’ve seen it all done it all, That’s why none of these dumb dumbs could done him off

Im not as cool with n-ggas as I once was, I once was, cool as the fonz was, but these bright lights turned me to a monster/ Sorry mama im promised they wouldn’t change me, but I woulda went insane, had i remain the same ME, F-ck nggas, bitches too, All I got is this money, this will do
