In the early hours of February 27, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 struck off of the coast of Chile. The earthquake released more than 500 times the amount of energy than the one in Haiti. Luckily for the Chilean people, the earthquake was located in an area not as densely populated as the one that struck Haiti.

The Chilean earthquake epicenter was located approximately 200 miles southwest of the Capital city of Santiago.  Santiago did receive heavy damage though from the earthquake. The historic district was the most devastated part of the capital city. Constitución, Chile received a great amount of damage.

The death toll in Chile has risen to over 200 people and expected to continue to rise. Buildings in the area of the earthquake are damaged and the structures are weak and could lead to collapses. Also, bridges and roads have been damaged and people are suggested to avoid driving on them.

President Obama has pledged US help to Chile, an envoy may be sent tomorrow to asses the level of action need by the US.

Tsunami

The massive earthquake in Chile sent a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean and tsunami warnings were issued for all countries touching it. A tsunami of approximately one meter hit Hawaii around 4 p.m. eastern time. No heavy damage was reported from the tsunami though.

Maui county take serious meassures to evacuate people from the beaches and homes hours before a Tsunami is due to hit.

In a move of good gesture, France has canceled and forgave Haiti of all debts incurred between the two nations. Maybe more nations will follow in France’s footsteps. While nations from all around the world are still pouring into the devastated country with aid and man-power, the rescue efforts have not ceased. There have been numerous accounts of people still being rescued alive recently. In a sadder note, the death toll has been estimated at 200,000.  My prayers still go out to Haiti and anyone that has been effected by the disaster.
