LeBron James “The Decision”

Tonight at 9pm on ESPN, LeBron James will announce to the world where his new home in the NBA will be.  In the hour long press conference James is expected to confirm rumors that Miami will be his new team.  Since his contract with Cleveland ended on July 1, there has been speculation that the 2 time MVP and former Rookie of the year will sign with either the Chicago Bulls, the New York Knicks, the New Jersey Nets or most likely the Miami Heat.

Resigning with Cleveland would probably make smarter financial sense because the 25 year old can make about $125.5 million over 6 years, whereas a contract with other teams could “only” pay him 96.1 million over 5 years.  Poor guy.

While James led the Cavs to the best record in the NBA for the last 2 years, he failed to lead the team to a championship, and many believe he will take his talent elsewhere to find a more solid team to play with.  Tune in to “The Decision” tonight at 9pm on ESPN and we will keep you posted on further updates

The announcement was made this evening that Carlos Boozer is the newest player to be added to the Chicago Bulls roster. According to chicagotribune.com the 28-year-old signed a 5-year $76 million contract with the Bulls.

With Lebron James scheduled to annouce his decision tomorrow night, I can only assume that adding Boozer the night before was a strategic attempt to take away any doubts that the 25-year-old NBA superstar may have about Chicago. Adding Boozer who averaged 20.5 points and 11.2 rebounds for Utah last season to a team that already consist of outstanding players like Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah could unquestionably up the ante.

Chicago would be tempting to many but to someone like Lebron James who has such a wide variety of choices, this will undoubtly be a hard decision to make. Other great teams like the New York Knicks who recently added Amar’e Stoudemire, the Nets with young and talented players like Devin Harris and Brook Lopez, Miami who welcomed the return of Dwayne Wade and Cleveland who lead the league in wins all hope to add Lebron James to their roster. It will defintely be interesting to see what team King James will choose.

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback Jamarcus Russell was arrested after an undercover narcotics investigation at his home in Mobile, Alabama for possesion of a controlled substance. According to Mobile Press-Register the substance was codeine syrup. Reportedly the 24-year-old was booked this afternoon and realeased shortly after on a $2,500 bond.

In 2007  Russell was the no.1 NFL draft pick but was recently released from the Oakland Raiders, making him the second no.1 pick to be released so quickly in his career. According to huffingtonpost.com the Raiders release of Russell was considered one of the NFL’s biggest draft busts, in May after he won only seven of his 25 starts and was benched. He completed just 52.1 percent of his passes in his career with 18 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 15 lost fumbles and a passer rating of 65.2.

Former NBA Player Ray Williams Homeless?

After a 10 year career in the NBA, Ray Williams  is homeless, living in a car that doesn’t run and eats out of soup kitchens 23 years later. According to the Boston Globe he is not on drugs, doesn’t abuse alcohol and doesn’t gamble. So…how does that happen?

No one has released any documentation to prove excessive spending or extravagant purchases but according to Bob Holer of the Boston Globe, when Williams filed for bankruptcy in 1994, he simply was “no longer able to sustain his NBA lifestyle.” It seems that for the most part his current situation has more to do with bad luck and bad money management.

Williams career lasted from 1977 to 1987 and he reporetdly made over $2 Million. He also recieved about $12,000 from the NBA Legends foundation in which he used to buy a condo on a lease to own contract which fell through.

Williams situation is a bit puzzling to me. I can’t help but wonder if anyone stepped in to help him. I’m sure at the height of his career, he was surrounded by a slew of people claiming to care about him and have his back. Where are they now? This could be a lesson to the new generation of NBA players that feel like they are on top of the world with an infinite amount of money. Although the average NBA player makes substantially more than the players in 1987, Williams proves that the money can run out just as fast as a career in the NBA. Oh and let’s not forget all of those people that surround them that claim to be their friends. Where will they be if  it all comes crashing down?
